Authorizing the Department of Parks and Recreation to accept donations of a mural, basketball backboards, sports equipment, and food, valued at $13,000, from the Big Ten Conference to enhance the gym and offer opportunities to participants at the Martin Luther King Recreation Center.

WHEREAS, the Big Ten Conference is a host organization for NCAA University athletic organizations and is hosting their men’s and women’s conference championship basketball tournaments in the Twins Cities in 2024; and
WHEREAS, in conjunction with said tournaments, the Big Ten identified the Martin Luther King Recreation Center as a site for their “B1G Impact, Community Legacy” program; and
WHEREAS, the Department of Parks and Recreation is requesting permission to accept donations of a mural, basketball backboards, sports equipment, and food, valued at $13,000, from the Big Ten Conference to host and enhance the gym at the Martin Luther King Recreation Center; and
WHEREAS, the donations, if accepted, will provide a better-quality experience for participants at Martin Luther King Recreation Center; and
WHEREAS, there is no required match of these funds by the City; and
WHEREAS, the Saint Paul City Council finds that the donation of these items to support a major enhancement to the facility and program offerings at Martin Luther King Recreation Center has a public purpose; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Saint Paul authorizes the Parks and Recreation Department to accept donations valued at $13,000 from the Big Ten Conference and thanks them for their generous donation.
