Honoring the life and work of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

 

Body

WHEREAS, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15th, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia and;

 

WHEREAS, years later, Rev. King Jr. spearheaded the Civil Rights movement and campaigned to end segregation in the United States and;

 

WHEREAS, in 1964, Rev. King Jr. won a Nobel Peace Prize for his work in nonviolent protest to end racial discrimination and;

 

WHEREAS, in addition to desegregation and Civil Rights, Rev. King was an invaluable champion for Voting Rights and Labor Rights and;

 

WHEAREAS, Rev. King Jr. led the Montgomery Bus Boycott alongside the Student Nonviolent Coordinator Committee (SNCC) and National Association Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and;

 

WHEREAS, Rev. King Jr. led marches for Civil Rights in Washington D.C. and from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, and;

 

WHEREAS, Rev. King Jr. visited Saint Paul on April 27th, 1967 to speak against the War in Vietnam and;

 

WHEREAS, Rev. King Jr. was assassinated on April 4th, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee and;

 

WHEREAS, Saint Paul is home to the Martin Luther King Recreation Center, which serves Saint Paul families daily and provides them invaluable support and;

 

WHEREAS, to this day, many dedicated community organizations and leaders continue the work of Rev. King Jr. and his legacy and;

 

WHEREAS, the Saint Paul City Council is committed to continuing and championing Rev. King Jr. work in civil rights, therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED, the Saint Paul City Council honors and recognizes the life and work of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
