Authorizing the Department of Parks and Recreation to apply for and, if awarded, accept grant funds in the amount of $150,000 from the Minnesota State Arts Board for recreation center youth programs.

WHEREAS, the Department of Parks and Recreation is requesting permission to apply for $150,000 in grant funds from the Minnesota State Arts Board Arts Learning program for the purpose of partnering with the East Side Arts Council, COMPAS, and Juxtaposition Arts to bring professional artists in as workshop instructors for recreation center youth programs; and
WHEREAS, the goals for the grant are as follows: Dramatically expand the number and quality of community-based out-of-school time arts learning opportunities available to St. Paul youth in grades K-12; Address cost and transportation barriers to high quality arts opportunities by offering free learning opportunities at neighborhood recreation centers across the City; Engage 1,560 youth, most of color and low-income communities, in high quality arts learning experiences; and Support St. Paul's framework for youth success by providing opportunities for youth to become learners and contributors in the arts; and
 
WHEREAS,  these goals are consistent with the mission of the Department of Parks and Recreation and acceptance of the funds, if awarded, will further the health, safety and well-being of local neighborhoods by improving resources for youth;  now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Saint Paul authorizes Parks and Recreation to apply for and if awarded accept these funds.
