Amending the 2024 spending budget in the Department of Public Works Street Lighting Maintenance accounting unit to account for wire theft replacement and prevention expenditures in the amount of $300,000.
Body
WHEREAS, the City of St. Paul maintains over 33,000 streetlights which contribute to the city’s safety and positive public appearance, and
WHEREAS, there is an ongoing problem of city-owned street light poles being vandalized and emptied of their essential copper wire, rendering lighting infrastructure inoperable and non-functioning, and
WHEREAS, the city is embracing an initiative to protect its infrastructure from such theft, and is working to implement a variety of preventive measures for this endeavor, and
WHEREAS, to sustain this important work, Traffic Operations has identified a need for two additional seasonal electricians, materials, and corresponding vehicle rental financing; and
WHEREAS, the Saint Paul Police Department is committed to implementing preventive measures to reduce wire theft; and
WHEREAS, there is $300,000 of budget authority available in street lighting materials funds to support the cost of installation labor, equipment, and police services in 2024; therefore via
ADMINISTRATIVE ORDER, consistent with the authority granted to the Mayor in Section 10.07.4 of the City Charter, and on the request of the Director of the Public Works Department to amend the 2024 budget in the General Fund and Street Lighting Maintenance accounting unit, the Director of the Office of Financial Services is authorized to amend said budget in the manner as specified in the attached financial analysis.
