Honoring Jacklyn Milton for her outstanding contributions as a literacy champion and literary leader on her 70th birthday.

WHEREAS, on the occasion of her 70th birthday, the City Council recognizes the invaluable contributions and unwavering dedication of Jacklyn Milton towards promoting literacy and education in our community and;

WHEREAS, Jacklyn Milton, a literary leader and the administrative director of the Planting People Growing Justice Leadership Institute, a literary nonprofit, has been planting seeds of hope in St. Paul by promoting literacy and diversity, exemplifying extraordinary dedication and leadership, and;

WHEREAS, among her goals, Jacklyn Milton has actively worked to disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline by prioritizing teaching students to read, understanding that students unable to do so are four times more likely than other students to drop out of school, and recognizing that 85 percent of children in the juvenile justice system are not literate, and;

WHEREAS, Jacklyn Milton's relentless efforts focus on ensuring that every child reads at least 1,000 books before kindergarten, utilizing book drives and intergenerational reading circles to support this objective, and;

WHEREAS, she oversees the "Leaders are Readers" program by providing free books and school supplies to children who struggle academically, thereby significantly contributing to fostering a love for reading among countless children through her tireless efforts, and;

WHEREAS, Jacklyn Milton was born on December 19th, 1953, in Saint Paul, Minnesota,

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council herby proclaims December 19th as Jacklyn Milton Day in honor of her 70th birthday and recognizing her outstanding contributions as a literary leader, literacy champion, and advocate for education. This day serves to commemorate her lifelong commitment to literacy, advocacy, education, and her invaluable service to our community.
