Recognizing March 2021 as Women’s History Month.

WHEREAS, the month of March has been recognized nationally as Women’s History Month since 1987 when Congress expanded the previous recognition of Women’s History Week, first nationally observed in 1981; and

WHEREAS, Women’s History Month celebrates the achievements of women in Arts, Education, Entertainment, Government, History, Law, Literature, Medicine, the Military, Music, Politics, Science, Sports, and other endeavors; and

WHEREAS, the work and accomplishments of women have been historically under appreciated; and

WHEREAS, women have been oppressed and marginalized in various ways throughout history, and continue to face sexism, misogyny, racism and transphobia to this day; and

WHEREAS, we must integrate the perspectives of ALL women - including Black, Indigenous, Women of Color and Trans Women - into our social and political spheres; and

WHEREAS, women serve as political, social, and cultural leaders in Saint Paul; and

WHEREAS, the work of many of these women has been recognized both on a state and a national level; and

WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul has directly benefited from the contributions of women, yet too many have been forgotten and gone unrecognized; and

WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul will strive to uphold ALL women in their respective spheres with the understanding that there is still progress to be made; and now therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council recognize March 2021 to be Women’s History Month; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council encourages all residents to join in recognizing the accomplishments and contributions of women to the success of our city.
