Honoring the historic Hamm Building on its 100th birthday.

WHEREAS, the Historic Hamm Building is turning 100 years old on September 12th, 2019, after 10 decades of standing proudly on the corner of St. Peter and Seventh Place Mall in downtown St. Paul, and
WHEREAS, the building’s rich history started during World War I when William Hamm, owner of Hamm’s Brewery, saw an opportunity to expand the empire by financing the development of a partially completed structure on the site of the current Hamm Building, and
WHEREAS, what had initially been intended to be a department store, became a six-story office and retail building housing an office for the Hamm Brewery, trendy retail boutiques, as well as the Upper Midwest’s most costly and ornate movie theatre at the time, and
WHEREAS, the building attracted all types of tenants and activities, including some that played on the other side of the law in the 1930’s, and
WHEREAS, the Hamm Building is one of the remaining legacies of St. Paul’s prominent Hamm family and a longtime cultural hub for the city, and
WHEREAS, the Hamm Building is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and continues to be a major attraction in the heart of St. Paul, with tenants such as Meritage, Park Square Theatre, Heimie’s Haberdashery, Landmark Jewelry, and more, and
WHEREAS, on September 12th, the public is invited to gather at the Hamm Building to celebrate the significance of the past 100 years and toast the next 100, now therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the City of Saint Paul congratulates the owners and tenants of the Hamm Building on the building’s 100th anniversary and thanks them for their contributions to Saint Paul.
