Authorizing the Donation of the Saint Paul Public Library Association's collection of Horn Book Magazine to the University of Minnesota

WHEREAS,the George Latimer Central Library has, over many years, developed a large collection of professional book review journals for the use of staff, including the journal Horn Book Magazine from 1928 to 2012; and
WHEREAS, the Saint Paul Public Library Agency has never catalogued or circulated these materials to members of the public; and
WHEREAS, the focus of the Saint Paul Public Library Agency's collection, according to current collection development policy, is to emphasize breadth over depth, unabridged over abridged and general materials over specialized, scholarly, and professional materials; and
WHEREAS, these reviews are available in digital format to staff who are responsible for maintaining book collections; and
WHEREAS, the SPPLA wishes to donate this collection to the University of Minnesota; and
WHEREAS, the University of Minnesota’s Kerlan Collection is one of the world's great children's literature archives. The Collection includes books, original manuscripts and illustrations, and related materials. The materials in the Collection are studied by teachers, librarians, students, authors, illustrators, translators, and critics from Minnesota and around the world; and
WHEREAS, the Kerlan Collection has the appropriate infrastructure and archival knowledge to preserve these materials and they will be available to the public via the resources of the University of Minnesota; and
WHEREAS, the Saint Paul Library Agency Board finds that ensuring that these materials will be preserved and made available to the public fulfills a public purpose; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul Library Agency is hereby authorized to donate the full range of Horn Book Magazine from 1928 to 2012 to the University of Minnesota’s Kerlan Collection.
