Authorizing Mayor Carter’s Office to apply for the Bloomberg Philanthropies American Cities Climate Challenge, and enter into such agreements as are necessary to complete the project

WHEREAS, the recently adopted Partners in Energy Plan, the Mayor’s commitment to the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, the recently launched Energize Saint Paul challenge, ongoing work on a City Climate Action Plan, city efforts to improve transit, bicycling, and walking infrastructure as well as shared use mobility options, the City’s partnership with District Energy Saint Paul, and many other previous commitments of the City of Saint Paul to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions create a strong foundation for further work to reduce the City’s carbon emissions and address climate change; and
WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul previously received assistance from Bloomberg Philanthropies’ What Works Cities initiative that helped the City improve processes and transparency in governance; and
WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul has been working with partners on City Energy Project funded work to reduce emissions from the buildings sector in Saint Paul; and
WHEREAS, Bloomberg Philanthropies recently announced its intentions to partner with the 20 of the 100 largest cities in the United States through the American Cities Climate Challenge to further climate action across the United States over the coming two years; and
WHEREAS, a partnership with Bloomberg and 19 other major cities across the U.S. would further the goals of the City Council and the Mayor to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Saint Paul and continue to be a national leader in this critically important work; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council hereby authorizes Mayor Carter’s Office to submit a proposal to Bloomberg Philanthropies for the American Cities Climate Challenge and enter into such agreements as are necessary to complete the project.
