Title

Approving the Mayor’s appointment of Maria Mitchell to her second three-year term on the Human Rights and Equal Economic Opportunity Commission and designating her to serve as chairperson of the Human Rights and Equal Economic Opportunity Commission.

 

Body

WHEREAS, Saint Paul Legislative Code Section 183.19 (1) states that the Human Rights and Equal Economic Opportunity Commission consists of twenty-one (21) members appointed by the mayor with the consent of the council; and

WHEREAS, in RES 15-1709, Maria Mitchell was appointed by Mayor Coleman with the consent of the council to serve her first three-year term as a commissioner; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Carter wishes to reappoint Maria Mitchell to the Human Rights and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission for her second three-year term ending on June 7, 2021; and

WHEREAS, Saint Paul Legislative Code Section 183.19 (3) states that “[t]he chairperson of the commission shall be designated by the mayor with the approval of the council”; and

WHEREAS, under Saint Paul Legislative Code Section 183.19 (3) a chairperson shall service for a term ending on the first business day in January of each even-numbered year; and

WHEREAS, the previous chairperson, Melissa Houghtaling, resigned her seat on the Human Rights and Equal Economic Opportunity Commission as of January 31, 2018 when she was appointed to a position in the Minnesota judiciary, thereby creating a vacancy in the chairperson position; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Carter wishes to designate Maria Mitchell to serve as chair of the Human Rights and Equal Economic Opportunity Commission for her first two-year term ending on January 2, 2020; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council consents to the reappointment of Maria Mitchell to a three-year term ending June 7, 2021 as a commissioner on the Human Rights and Equal Economic Opportunity Commission; and be it

FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council approves the designation of Maria Mitchell to serve as chair of the Human Rights and Equal Economic Opportunity Commission, such term ending on January 2, 2020.
