Title

Authorizing the Police Department to accept a grant in the amount of $491,508 from the State of Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development for the LECPA program renewal.

 

Body

WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul, Police Department has been awarded a grant from the State of Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development; and

 

WHEREAS, under Minnesota Session Laws of 2016, Chapter 189, Article 12, the State is empowered to grant funds to expand economic opportunities and eliminate workforce and educational barriers faced by people of color, women, people with disabilities, veterans, and/or youth in Minnesota; and

 

WHEREAS, this grant will renew the support of the Law Enforcement Career Path Academy (LECPA) program that began in 2017 and has already demonstrated success; and

 

WHEREAS, the LECPA program addresses critical concerns around equity in law enforcement and the project aims to increase the diversity of the City of Saint Paul officers by targeting enrollment for low-income, underemployed or unemployed young adults from the Saint Paul communities of color; and

 

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that council accepts this grant with the State of Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development.
