Approving the Mayor's appointment of Melissa Houghtaling to be Chairperson of the Human Rights and Equal Economic Opportunity Commission.

WHEREAS, Sec. 183.19 of the Saint Paul Legislative Code provides that the chairperson of the Human Rights and Equal Economic Opportunity (HREEO) Commission shall be designated by the mayor, with the approval of the council, and shall serve for a term ending on the first business day in January of each even-numbered year; and
WHEREAS, JaPaul Harris, who has served as chairperson of the commission since 2011, has less than two years remaining in his third term and is, therefore, ineligible for reappointment as chairperson; and
WHEREAS, Melissa Houghtaling has served on the commission since January 22, 2014 and has a distinguished record as an attorney and advocate for human rights in Saint Paul and across Minnesota; and
WHEREAS, with gratitude to JaPaul Harris for his steadying leadership through a time of significant transition for the commission, Mayor Chris Coleman has appointed Melissa Houghtaling to be chairperson of the HREEO Commission, pending the consent of the council; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council consents to and approves the appointment by Mayor Coleman of Melissa Houghtaling to serve as chairperson of the Human Rights and Equal Economic Opportunity Commission for a term ending on January 2, 2020.
