Celebrating May, 2017 as Preservation Month.

Body

WHEREAS, Preservation Month was established by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1973 and has been observed every May since; and

WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul declares as a matter of public policy that the preservation, protection, perpetuation and use of areas, places, buildings, structures and other objects having a special historical, community or aesthetic interest or value is a public necessity and is required in the interest of the health, prosperity, safety and welfare of the people, and

WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul has a number of National Register, State Register, and locally designated heritage preservation sites and historic districts; and

WHEREAS, historic preservation is an effective tool for managing growth and sustainable development, revitalizing neighborhoods, fostering local pride, and maintaining community character while enhancing livability; and

WHEREAS, historic preservation is inherently economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable, fostering a culture of reuse and maximizing the life cycle of all resources through conservation; and

WHEREAS, historic preservation is relevant for communities across the nation, for Americans of all ages, all walks of life, and all ethnic backgrounds; and

WHEREAS, it is important to celebrate the role of history in our lives and the contributions made by dedicated individuals in helping to preserve the tangible aspects of the heritage that have shaped us as a people; and

WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul continues to demonstrate its commitment to preservation through ongoing survey and designation of historic resources, and rehabilitation and restoration of historic properties; and

WHEREAS, many Saint Paul residents, groups and organizations work hard to preserve Saint Paul’s past for future generations; and therefore be it

RESOLVED, the Saint Paul City Council proclaims May 2017 as Preservation Month, and calls upon the people of Saint Paul to join their fellow citizens across the United States in recognizing and participating in this special month through the activities in our community during the month of May.
