Declaring November 10, 2016 to be City of Saint Paul's Accountant Day.

WHEREAS, November 10th is celebrated as International Accounting Day around the world; and

WHERAS, accounting professionals have a significant role in the accuracy, recording, and fiscal accountability of business and government throughout the United States; and

WHEREAS, accountants engage in or have direct responsibility for managing the fiscal management of governmental financial resources by using skills in math, accounting, law, and finance; and

WHEREAS, accountants identify, develop and advance fiscal strategies, policies and practices for the public benefit; and

WHEREAS, accountants must maintain high standards of ethics, professionalism, and knowledge by maintaining and enhancing their skills through continuing professional education; and

WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul accounting staff has received a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association for 40 consecutive years; and

WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul implemented a new enterprise resource planning (ERP) software in 2014, introducing complexity and change to the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) process; and

WHEREAS, while utilizing the new ERP software the City of Saint Paul accountants maintained a high standard of reporting with an unqualified opinion from the Office of the State Auditor in the 2014 and 2015 CAFRs; and

WHEREAS, accountants in the City of Saint Paul deserve recognition for their hard work and the positive impact they have in our communities and business; and

Now, therefore, the Saint Paul City Council along with Mayor Coleman, do hereby proclaim November 10, 2016 to be City of Saint Paul’s Accountant Day.
