Honoring John Maczko's City Engineer of the Year award and his commitment to serving Saint Paul.



WHEREAS John Maczko was appointed to be the Saint Paul City Engineer in June 2003, after having served as City Traffic Engineer, Traffic Operations Engineer, Electrical Operations and Maintenance Engineer and Signal Design Engineer since joining the City in 1985; and

WHEREAS, over his career John has been a leader in the promotion of pedestrian safety through the design and implementation of Audible  Pedestrian Signals, the development of a traffic calming “tool box” and the establishment of a Pedestrian Safety Committee for the Institute of Transportation Engineers; and

WHEREAS, John was instrumental to the successful planning and construction of the Green Line through his involvement in  every facet of the project from construction staging to community engagement to signal timing design to complex accounting arrangements with the Metropolitan Council; and

WHEREAS, John is appreciated by his many colleagues across the City and in other jurisdictions for his thoughtful approach to complex issues, his openness to community dialogue and his willingness to try new ways of doing things; and

WHEREAS, former Public Works Director and City Engineer Tom Eggum summarized the John Maczko we all know by writing, “John has always displayed a highly energetic and intense involvement with his assignments.  His mind can process multiple complex issues.  He’s able to integrate engineering principles with political realities. His long work hours and driven approach to solving problems and accomplishing difficult tasks is impressive;” and

WHEREAS John exemplifies the spirit of public service by participating in civic activities including building Habitat for Humanity homes, supporting the 2004 Winter Carnival, Ice Palace and NHL All-Star Weekend and serving as the volunteer Fire Chief in the City of Mendota Heights; and

WHEREAS, the City Engineers Association of Minnesota named John Maczko City Engineer of the Year at their annual conference on January 27, 2016; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Saint Paul congratulates John Maczko on this honor and thanks him for his commitment to the community.
