Authorizing the Fire Department to apply for the FY2014 Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant.
 
Body
WHEREAS, fire departments across the nation have been offered the opportunity to compete for federal funding support to increase the number of full-time firefighters through a grant program entitled Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant, and
WHEREAS, the Fire Department would benefit from the SAFER grant support to hire up to 16 additional firefighters to fully staff Super Medic 5 (Rondo neighborhood) and a Super Medic on the East Side, or to help avoid a reduction in sworn staff in the event of difficult financial conditions, and
 
WHEREAS, the grant amount would be up to $2,487,224 of which the federal government would provide full funding to support these additional firefighter positions over the next two years, and
WHEREAS, the City is not under any obligation to retain any new firefighters at the end of the grant performance period, and
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the proper City officials are hereby authorized and directed to execute an application for the Fire Department to apply for the FY2014 Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant; a copy of said application is to be kept on file and of record in the Office of Financial Services.
