Approving the Mayor's reappointment of Tim Butler to serve as the Chief of the Saint Paul Fire Department.

Whereas, Fire Chief Tim Butler was appointed to the position of Chief for the Saint Paul Fire Department on October 30, 2007 and Mayor Christopher B. Coleman intends to retain him as Chief of the Saint Paul Fire Department for an additional six year term; and
Whereas, on November 7, 2007, the Saint Paul City Council consented to the appointment by a unanimous vote of 7-0 and Chief Butler has officially served as Chief since November 24, 2007; and
Whereas, Chief Butler has over 25 years of emergency response and management experience; and
Whereas, Chief Butler made crucial improvements to the department's infrastructure, while spearheading public outreach efforts and the creation of Saint Paul's nationally-renowned EMS Academy and Basic Life Support Unit; and
Whereas, under Chief Butler's leadership, the Saint Paul Fire Department has made strides to become more diverse; and
Whereas, under Chief Butler, the Saint Paul Fire Department added super-medic units, an investment that improved response times, increased fire engine availability, and created more effective and more efficient use of fire and EMS resources; and
Whereas, a retired member of the U.S. Coast Guard and Reserves, Butler served in U.S. military contingency operations in Grenada, Europe, Iraqi Air Operations, mobilization for the September 11, 2001 attacks and Operation Enduring Freedom and also served as a liaison officer for the US military Crisis Action Team responding to the grounding of the Exxon Valdez and as Chief of Staff for the US Transportation Command's Crisis Action Team; and
Whereas, the Saint Paul Fire Department has a long tradition of providing great service to our residents and Butler has proven he has the dedication and talent to keep the City of Saint Paul moving forward; and
Whereas, the Mayor has re-appointed Tim Butler to the position of Chief of the Saint Paul Fire Department and the consent of the City Council is required for the re-appointment;
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Saint Paul, pursuant to Section 12.12.4 of the City Charter which addresses reappointment of a Fire Chief, does hereby reconfirm the reappointment of Timothy Butler to a subsequent term as Fire Chief of the Saint Paul Fire Department commencing November 24, 2013.
