Recognizing Mrs. Vivian Clausen for her years of dedication, volunteerism and commitment to the North End neighborhood as she approaches her 100th birthday;

WHEREAS, Vivian Clausen started working at the age of 14 at the Minnesota Macaroni Company on the West Side of Saint Paul where she met her lifelong friend, the mother of Saint Paul Police Chief Tom Smith; and
 
WHEREAS, Vivian Clausen came to Rice Street to work for Dr. Wenzel, one of the founders of the Rice Street Clinic, and for Dr. Peter Belgea, a dentist who officed on Rice Street and Manitoba; and
 
WHEREAS, Vivian Clausen met her husband Andrew and was married in 1939 and moved to an apartment on Rice Street where she still resides; and
 
WHEREAS, Vivian Clausen's generosity and numerous acts of kindness were evident when she raised the funds needed to pay for the veterinary costs for Mike (Bones) Hartzell's dog; and
 
WHEREAS, Vivian Clausen successfully lobbied Metro Transit to place a bus shelter at the corner of Rice Street and Milford Street, in consideration of her friends with disabilities who reside at Lewis Park Apartments; and
 
WHEREAS, Vivian Clausen kept the bus shelter clean and free of trash and tended the sidewalks with her own broom; and
 
WHEREAS, Vivian Clausen was watchful for unwanted activity and patrolled the neighborhood in her own unqiue way; and
 
WHEREAS, Vivian Clausen is a regular attendee at the Central Police Community Meetings and is always ready to report what she has observed on Rice Street; and
 
WHEREAS, Vivian Clausen was often heard to say:  "I love my Rice Street!"
 
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Saint Paul City Council recognizes Mrs. Vivian Clausen and commends and thanks Mrs. Clausen for being an inspiration and treasured asset of the North End Community and her beloved Rice Street.
