Authorizing the Police Department to purchase and issue gift cards for the annual 2012 Shop with Cops program.
Body
WHEREAS, the Western District of the Saint Paul Police Department, will conduct its annual 2012 Shop With Cops program; and
WHEREAS, the public purpose of the Shop with Cops program is to foster positive relationships between youth and the Saint Paul Police Officers. Young kids, K-6th grade, are selected each year during the end of the year holiday season to shop at one of the local area stores to purchase gifts for members of their immediate family. Each child is given a gift card to spend from $50-$100 depending on the size of the child's immediate family. One to two children are assigned to each officer, who then escorts them around the store and assists in selecting appropriate gifts for each family member. After shopping, the children will eat lunch, wrap their gifts, and continue to get to know the police officers.
THEREFORE BE IT ORDERED, that pursuant to the 2012 city budget, the proper City Officials are hereby authorized to purchase gift cards not to exceed $5,000.00 from local area stores for distribution to the children selected for the Shop with Cops program and to cover expenses for food, water and soda for the above mentioned lunch and gift wrapping session.
