Authorizing the City Attorney's Office to apply for Byrne Justice Assistance Criminal and Juvenile Justice Intervention Renewal (Byrne-JAG) grant.

WHEREAS, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Office of Justice Programs, (OJP) has released a request for proposals for the two-year Byrne Justice Assistance Criminal and Juvenile Justice Intervention Renewal (Byrne-JAG) grant, for grantees, including the Saint Paul City Attorney’s Office (CAO), who are current recipients of the Byrne-JAG grant, and
WHEREAS, the CAO’s current OJP Byrne-JAG grant is for the period of October 1, 2019 to September 30, 2021, and
WHEREAS, the OJP notified the CAO that its current grant would be renewed and that any money remaining could be carried over into a new two-year grant; and
WHEREAS, the CAO is eligible to apply for $257,050.00 to provide services through the ETHOS program during the 24-month period of October 1, 2021 to September 30, 2023, and
WHEREAS, the CAO Criminal Division is committed to individualized justice and alternatives to traditional prosecution whereby certain offenders can address the harm caused by their actions by connecting with community members to take accountability for their actions and find a way to heal the victim, the community, and themselves, and
WHEREAS, alternatives to traditional prosecution offered by the CAO, including the restorative practices of ETHOS, benefit the citizens of the City of Saint. Paul, and
WHEREAS, receipt of the renewal grant will allow the CAO Criminal Division to continue the important work of ETHOS, now, therefore be it
RESOLVED that the Saint. Paul City Council hereby authorizes the Saint. Paul City Attorney, Lyndsey Olson or her designees to apply for the Byrne Justice Assistance Criminal and Juvenile Justice Intervention Renewal (Byrne-JAG) grant.
