We urgently need to strengthen our separation ordinance in the interests of public safety. (Conversely, the idea that ICE is protecting public safety is not credible: they are picking up nonviolent, contributing members of society with no criminal records and ripping families apart.) Updates needed are: (1) Prohibit federal authorities from using city resources or property for immigration enforcement actions. (2) Prohibit local police from employing crowd control to facilitate federal law enforcement. We’ve seen already the damage done to public trust by SPPD’s use of chemical weapons and rubber bullets on journalists and observers on November 25. Mutual safety of community members and officers comes from mutual trust, and keeping local police out of civil immigration enforcement is crucial for that trust.
