Title

Amending the financing and spending plans in the Department of Parks and Recreation in the amount of $10,000 to reflect additional funding received from the Berglund Family Foundation for restoration of the historic Schiffman Fountain in Como Park.

 

Body

WHEREAS, the Department of Parks and Recreation manages and maintains ornamental sculptures and fountains in the park system, including the historic Schiffman Fountain in Como Park; and

 

WHEREAS; this beloved sculpture and fountain has fallen into disrepair and is in need of an extensive restoration; and

 

WHEREAS; the Department of Parks and Recreation has worked with an art conservator to evaluate, design a plan, and estimate the cost of the restoration work needed; and

 

WHEREAS; The first phase of the restoration of the mermaid sculpture has been completed thanks to $40,000 in funding from the Berglund Family and Cedarwood Foundations; and

 

WHEREAS; The second phase of the restoration includes new LED lighting, a new water pump manifold and overall upgrades to the internal operating system of the fountain components; and

 

WHEREAS; The Raymond and Florence Berglund Family Foundation has committed to an additional $10,000 donation in 2019 towards the completion of the overall restoration project; and

 

WHEREAS; the City acknowledges and thanks this organization for their generous donation to restoring Schiffman Fountain; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council hereby accepts the funding from the Berglund Family Foundation and approves the amendment to the appropriate CITY budget codes to allow spending authority for the restoration to be initiated.
