Declaring Saturday, October 24, 2015 to be Food Day in the City of St. Paul.
Body
WHEREAS, the health and well-being of our citizens is of primary concern for the City of Saint Paul; and
WHEREAS, promoting access and enjoyment of safe, healthy, whole food is a critical factor in improving citizens’ overall health; and
WHEREAS, healthy soils are necessary to grow healthy food; and
WHEREAS, supporting sustainable family farms and local agriculture benefits the local economy; and
WHEREAS, obtaining fair pay and safe conditions for food and farm workers is beneficial for both the producer and consumer so that the food we produce and consume is safe and fair for all; and
WHEREAS, reforming factory farms to protect the environment and farm animals is necessary to sustain future generations;
WHEREAS, encouraging greater awareness of the issue of food waste and what citizens can do to reduce food waste is of critical importance to building a strong, healthy food system;
WHEREAS, eliminating food-related health and economic disparities are critical goals; and
WHEREAS, a host of stakeholders have curated a weeklong series of events showcasing the power of real, fair, local, and healthy food;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council declares Saturday, October 24, 2015 to be Food Day in the City of St. Paul, and urges all citizens to participate in the activities planned.
