Celebrating National Bookmobile Day 2011.

WHEREAS, the Saint Paul Public Library plays a vital role in supporting the quality of life in the City; and,
WHEREAS, library workers are trained professionals, helping people of all ages and backgrounds find and interpret the information they need to live, learn and work in a challenging economy; and,
WHEREAS, for nearly 100 years, since 1917, the Saint Paul Public Library’s Bookmobile has played a vital role in fulfilling the mission of the Library, bringing the resources of the Library and the expertise of librarians directly to all kinds of communities and neighborhoods; and,
WHEREAS, in 2010, the Saint Paul Public Library’s Bookmobile partnered with over 80 organizations and sites including the Saint Paul Public Housing Agency, the Saint Paul Public Schools, Episcopal Homes of Minnesota, Common Bond Communities, the Wilder Foundation and many more in order to serve, in their communities, the people who face barriers in accessing the public library; and,
WHEREAS, bookmobiles are modern, changing and dynamic mobile information centers for the 21st century, providing not just books, but DVDs, music, internet access, resources for job searches, and more; and,
WHEREAS, as an extension of the library, bookmobiles are part of the American Dream - a place for opportunity, education, self-help and lifelong learning; and,
WHEREAS, in 2010, the Saint Paul Public Library’s Bookmobile circulated more than 114,000 items, answered over 38,000 reference questions and welcomed nearly 140,000 visitors; and,
WHEREAS, the Bookmobile continues to be a prime example of inter-city collaboration between Public Libraries, Public Works, Parks and Recreation, the Mayor’s Office and the City Council; and,
WHEREAS, libraries, library workers and supporters across America are celebrating National Bookmobile Day during National Library Week;
