Supporting two gun violence prevention bills being heard in the Minnesota House of Representatives Public Safety Committee on March 1, 2018.

WHEREAS House Files 1605 and 1669 are scheduled for hearing in the Public Safety Commitee of the State of Minnesota House of Representatives on Thursday, March 1, 2018, and
WHEREAS H.F. 1605 is a bill that would enable law enforcement and family members to petition a court to prohibit people from possessing firearms if they pose a signifant danger to themselves or others by possessing a firearm, and
WHEREAS H.F. 1669 is a bill that would require criminal background checks for firearm transfers including private sales on platforms such as craigslist, but excepting certain transfers such as exchanges between family members, and
WHEREAS gun violence afflicts cities across America, including the City of Saint Paul, and
WHEREAS sensible gun safety measures like universal background checks and an avenue to prevent acquision of firearms by a person in a moment of crisis would improve the safety of the general public,
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED the Saint Paul City Council supports passage of H.F. 1605 and H.F. 1669, and the continued public hearing and vetting of gun violence prevention proposals in the State of Minnesota.
