Authorizing the Police Department to apply for the Firearms Storage Grant from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

Body

 

WHEREAS, Chapter 10 of the Saint Paul City Charter recognizes the City Council’s authority over the budget and spending of the City of Saint Paul; and

 

WHEREAS, Chapter 86 of the Saint Paul Administrative Code requires all contracts be authorized by the Saint Paul City Council; and

 

WHEREAS, Section 86.12 of the Saint Paul Administrative Code requires City Council approval prior to submission of grant applications; and

 

WHEREAS, the Police Department would like to apply for a Firearms Storage Grant from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety - Office of Justice Programs, to support the safe and secure storage of firearms owned by persons subject to extreme risk protection orders (ERPO); and

 

WHEREAS, the grant amount would be up to $50,000 with a grant term of 11/1/2026-10/31/2027 and the original source for this funding is a federal Byrne State Crisis Intervention Program (SCIP) grant that was awarded to MN DPS; and

 

WHEREAS, there is no required match of these funds by the City; and

 

WHEREAS, the Grants Division of the Office of Financial Services has reviewed and approved the Intent to Apply request; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council authorizes the Police Department to apply for the Firearms Storage Grant.
