Approving the renaming of three streets in Como Regional Park.
Body
WHEREAS, Como Regional Park welcomes over 4 million park users each year; and
WHEREAS, the existing street names within the park cause confusion for park users as Como Avenue becomes Horton Avenue between Hamline Avenue and Lexington Parkway, while a separate street running through McMurray field is named Como Avenue; and
WHEREAS, the Como Regional Park Transportation Implementation Plan recommends renaming Horton Avenue between Hamline Avenue and Lexington Parkway to Como Avenue to assist park users navigating through the Park; and
WHEREAS to avoid duplicate street names within the park, the existing Como Avenue segment through McMurray Field would be renamed Wynne Avenue; and
WHEREAS, the Saint Paul Nagasaki Sister City Committee (SPNNSCC) is celebrating the 60th anniversary of Saint Paul's relationship with Nagasaki in 2015; and
WHEREAS, the former Nagasaki Road that was dedicated in 1962 near Harriet Island was removed during renovations in 2000; and
WHEREAS, in Nagasaki "Saint Paul Dori" is a street that runs past the entrance to the Peace Park named in recognition of the relationship of the two cities; and
WHEREAS, renaming Gateway Drive, east of Lexington Parkway, to Nagasaki Road will recognize this relationship in this celebratory year; and
WHEREAS, Saint Paul Legislative Code, Sec. 73.04 requires that the Saint Paul Heritage Preservation Commission approve all street name changes that are over 50 years old; and
WHEREAS, the Saint Paul Heritage Preservation Commission adopted a resolution indicating the changes will not have a negative impact on the City's cultural, social, economic, and political history in Saint Paul so long as the portion of Horton Avenue, east of Lexington Parkway, retains its name; now, therefore, be it
