Designating May 2019 as Older Americans Month.
Body
WHEREAS, the number of Minnesotans age 65 years and older is projected to grow to 1.3 or one-fifth of the population by 2030; and
WHEREAS, an average of 10,000 people each day turn age 65; and
WHEREAS, 29,275 persons 65 and older reside in the City of Saint Paul; and
WHEREAS, older persons are working longer, living longer, and enjoying healthier, more active, and more independent lifestyles; and
WHEREAS, older individuals in St. Paul play in important role in society by continuing to contribute their wisdom, knowledge, experience and accomplishments; and
WHEREAS, seniors in Saint Paul are diverse, respected citizens who contribute to our state’s social and economic well-being; and
WHEREAS, older individuals in St. Paul play vital roles in their communities and remain involved in volunteer work, the arts, cultural activities, and activities related to mentorship and civic engagement; and
WHEREAS, Social Security is the only source of income for almost three in ten Minnesotans age 65+; and
WHEREAS, home and community based programs, particularly the Living at Home Network programs in Saint Paul that include Como Park, East Side Elders, Hamline Midway, Highland Park, Neighborhood Network for Seniors, North East Seniors and North End-South Como, help seniors remain in their homes for as long as possible; and
WHEREAS, a society that recognizes the success of older individuals and continues to enhance the access of older individuals to quality and affordable care will:
1. Encourage the ongoing participation and heightened independence of those individuals; and
2. Ensure the continued safety and well-being of those individuals.
NOW, THEREFORE, Be It Resolved by the Saint Paul City Council, that May 2019 is designated as Older Americans Month.
