Accepting a gift and installation of seven overstory trees in Wacouta Commons, from the Friends of Wacouta Commons, valued at approximately $10,644.
Body
WHEREAS, Friends of Wacouta Commons engaged the District Council, City Council, and adjacent neighbors to discuss and approve planting of trees within Wacouta Commons; and
WHEREAS, due to compacted soils within Wacouta Commons, the original over story trees planted as part of park development did not survive; and
WHEREAS, the The Friends of Wacouta Commons wishes to gift the installation of 7 overstory trees within Wacouta Commons to the City of Saint Paul, valued at $10,644; and
WHEREAS, private funds were raised to purchase, plant, and maintain trees within the park, utilizing radial trenching to allow for root growth within compacted soil; and
WHEREAS, Friends of Wacouta Commons requested quotes from landscape contractors, selected a contractor, and a Contractor will install the trees in May or June 2020 according to the specifications of the Department of Parks and Recreation; and
WHEREAS, accepting the donation of these trees will represent a public benefit by restoring the tree canopy lost by the trees that were originally planted and did not survive, so the Department of Parks and Recreation is recommending, and wishes to accept the donation of the trees and their installation in Wacouta Commons; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the City of Saint Paul Council accepts the donation of the trees and thanks the Friends of Wacouta Commons for their generous gift.
