Declaring May 5, 2021 to be Irish Unity Day in the City of Saint Paul.

 

Body

 

WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul cherishes the historical experience of her communities; and

WHEREAS, the Irish Catholic community was instrumental in the formation and growth of the city; and

WHEREAS, Archbishop John Ireland and James J. Hill, founder of the Great Northern Railroad, collaborated to fund final construction of the Cathedral of Saint Paul on the city’s highest hill, thus bridging Irish Catholic and Scotts Irish Protestant communities who were military enemies in Ireland; and

WHEREAS, Saint Paul’s Irish community has continuously advocated peace, justice and freedom in Ireland; and

WHEREAS, under the Good Friday Agreement Peace Accord of 1998, historical inquiries continue seeking truth and justice for a peaceful Ireland; now therefore be it

RESOLVED, on this Saint Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2021, at the request of the Archbishop John Ireland Division 4-Ramsey County Ancient Order of Hibernians in America, in conjunction with collaborating Irish American organizations, the City of Saint Paul, in recognition of the sacrifices and struggles of the Irish people to achieve that peace, herby declares May 5, 2021, to be Irish Unity Day in Saint. Paul, Minnesota.
