Commemorating the observance of Veterans Day on November 11, 2019 and recognizing city employees who are veterans.
Body
WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul, and specifically this elected body, the Saint Paul City Council, has a deep respect for our freedom of speech and other inalienable rights; and
WHEREAS, those rights and freedoms were obtained through the sacrifice and devotion of our Nation’s Veterans; and
WHEREAS, the observance of Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was a recognition of the cessation of hostility of World War I at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month; and
WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul supports peace; and
WHEREAS, honoring the bravery, heroism, and sacrifice of the 263 volunteers of the First Minnesota Regiment who on July 2, 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg sustained 215 causalities and helped to turn the tide of the battle and preserve the union of our nation and ensure the end of slavery; and
WHEREAS, President Abraham Lincoln stated that “the great task remaining before us that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here gave the last full measure of devotion“; and
WHEREAS, this Council recognizes with great solemnity the dedication of this City Hall and Ramsey County Courthouse as a memorial to those Minnesotans who gave that last full measure of devotion, and
WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul recognizes the unique contributions and burdens of those who continue to serve our Nation, both domestically and abroad; and
WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul continues to welcome and respect all who seek to defend our rights to freedom, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and is a City of inclusion and acceptance; and
WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul expresses deep gratitude to the women and men who serve our nation and for the families, friends, neighbors, agencies, and employers who support that service; and
