Authorizing the Department of Parks and Recreation to apply for grant funds of $10,000 from the Minnesota Department of Health to support the implementation of virtual walking programs for people who have been diagnosed with arthritis.
Body
WHEREAS, the Minnesota Department of Health offers a Walking for Arthritis Partner Grant to build awareness or support walking initiatives within Minnesota communities; and
WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul performs significant services for residents of the Metropolitan area and all Minnesota residents through its ownership and operation of its parks, trails, and facilities; and
WHEREAS, the Department of Parks and Recreation is requesting permission to apply for grant funds of $10,000 from the Minnesota Department of Health to support the implementation of virtual walking programs geared towards people who have been diagnosed with arthritis; and
WHEREAS, the grant funds, if awarded, will provide quality instructors and programming to enhance the physical activity levels in those with arthritis; and
WHEREAS, as progress is made with fighting the coronavirus disease 19, possibilities of future in-person classes exist at Jimmy Lee Recreation Center and Arlington Hills Community Center, and walking programs may expand to other recreation centers as seen fit upon program evaluation; and
WHEREAS, there are no matching funds required with these granted funds by the Minnesota Department of Health; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Saint Paul authorizes the Parks and Recreation Department to apply for funds from the Minnesota Department of Health for implementation of walking programs geared towards people who have been diagnosed with arthritis.
