Whereas, Second Ambassador of Cuba Alejandro García del Toro and Vice Consul of Cuba Tatiana Martinez are visiting Saint Paul to celebrate the appearance of renowned Cuban American musician Nachito Herrera and the Havana Jazz All Stars at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts on September 24, 2022; and
Whereas, Cuban diplomats have visited St. Paul on several previous occasions with the goal of fostering relationships between the city, state and Cuba; and
Whereas, there are many historic connections between the people of Saint Paul and the people of Cuba, beginning in 1898, when Saint Paul's African American community staged several “Cuba” pageants celebrating Cuba's struggle for independence from Spain in the Spanish-American War; and
Whereas, although much limited by the U.S. embargo; academic, agricultural, governmental and business connections have continued to grow between the State of Minnesota, the City of Saint Paul and Cuba; and
Whereas, the City of Saint Paul has shown its support for the Cuban people by adopting a resolution against the U.S. embargo of Cuba on January 23, 2019; and
Whereas, a bust of Cuban national hero José Martí has stood in the northern stairwell of Saint Paul City Hall for many decades; therefore, be it
Resolved, that the City of Saint Paul extends a warm welcome and best wishes for a successful visit to Second Ambassador Alejandro García del Toro and Vice Consul Tatiana Martinez.
