Declaring April 10, 2019 as "Water Action Day" in St. Paul in support of efforts at the State Capitol to protect our water and watershed basins now and for future generations to come. 

 

Body

WHEREAS, by working together, people can make a positive impact in the fight against climate change; and

 

WHEREAS, the City of St. Paul has a commitment to the creation of green jobs with a shift away from fossil fuels and industries that pose a threat to the fight against climate change; and

 

WHEREAS, the quality of our water affects the health and quality of life of our citizens, our wildlife, our environment; now therefore be it

 

WHEREAS, proposed copper sulfide-mining (PolyMet and Twin Metals) in the Arrowhead Region of Minnesota could adversely affect watersheds, including the Lake Superior, the Boundary Waters, the Mississippi Basin, the St. Croix Basin; and

 

WHEREAS, the proposed Line 3 pipeline, if constructed, would cross through Mississippi headwaters and twice across the Mississippi River. If the new Line 3 ruptures, then these waters could carry oil across the state, polluting wetlands, wild rice beds, forests, and farmland; and

 

RESOLVED, the City of St. Paul supports the rights of citizens to become involved in the political process and express their views to elected officials.

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, the City of St. Paul is opposed to environmental injustices wherever they may occur,

 

FINALLYRESOLVED, the City of St. Paul declares April 10, 2019 Water Action Day in our city.
