Proclaiming January 13, 2011 to be Delta Sigma Theta Day in the City of Saint Paul.

Body

Whereas, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was founded on January 13, 1913 on the campus of Howard University by 22 dynamic and visionary collegiate women and incorporated in 1930; and

Whereas, committed to social action since its inception, the founders of the sorority performed their first public act in March of 1913, when they participated in the Women's Suffrage March in Washington, D.C. ; and

Whereas, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is an international, private, non-profit organization of more than 200,000 predominantly Black college educated women in over 900 chapters located in the United States, England, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, and the Republic of Korea; and

Whereas, the sorority provides assistance and support through established programs in local communities guided by its Five Point Programmatic Thrust:

                     Economic Development

                     Educational Development

                     International Awareness and Involvement

                     Physical and Mental Health

                     Political Awareness and Involvement; and

Whereas, the Minneapolis/St. Paul Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was chartered on March 12, 1966; and

Whereas, local initiatives of the sorority include:  Delta Day at the State Capitol, mentoring junior and senior high school girls in the Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy and the Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta GEMS Institute and hosting an annual Literary Luncheon, an event which generates scholarship funds to support students of African-American and African descent who choose higher education as their goal; and

Whereas, the Minneapolis/St. Paul Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated has chosen January 13, 2011 to commemorate the sorority’s longstanding legacy with Delta Day at the Minnesota State Capitol, an event designed to increase the knowledge of current local and national issues among its membership; influence the enactment of legislation, of particular interest to African Americans and women; and to maintain vigilance over action or inaction by local judicial and administrative agencies and officials; and now, therefore be it

Resolved, that the City of Saint Paul does hereby acknowledge the ongoing significant contributions to community made by members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated both nationally and locally; and, be it

Further Resolved, that January 13, 2011 is hereby proclaimed Delta Sigma Theta Day in the City of Saint Paul.
