Accepting a contribution from Knight Foundation for City staff to attend "8-80 Cities Forum: The Doable City," in Chicago, IL, June 16-18, 2014.

WHEREAS, from June 16-18, 2014, the "8-80 Cities Forum: The Doable City" will gather civic leaders from across the country in Chicago, IL to discuss ways to make cities more vibrant places where people can walk, bike, access transit, and enjoy parks and other public spaces; and
WHEREAS, the goal of the Forum is to focus on devising solutions to community challenges that produce immediate results - i.e. to go from talking to doing; and
WHEREAS, the Forum aims to create a network of change-makers by building connections among community leaders and institutions, breaking down silos and sharing what is possible in each other's cities; and
WHEREAS, the Forum is supported by $274,000 from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation; and
WHEREAS, the Knight Foundation has invited eight (8) City staff to attend the "8-80 Cities Forum: The Doable City," and will pay a stipend to each staff person to cover registration, lodging and travel; and
WHEREAS, the following City staff will receive a stipend from the Knight Foundation in the amount noted:

WHEREAS, attendance by City staff at the "8-80 Cities Forum: The Doable City" will serve a public purpose by increasing City staff capacity to plan for and provide alternative modes of transportation, create vibrant parks and public spaces, engage the community across multiple sectors, enhance the environment through sustainable design and practices, and increase economic vitality through placemaking.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council hereby accepts the contribution of $9400 in stipends from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to pay the registration, lodging and travel expenses for eight (8) City staff to attend the "8-80 Cities Forum: The Doable City" in Chicago, IL from June 16-18, 2014.
