Recognizing the outstanding service of John Vomastek.

WHEREAS, John Vomastek joined the Saint Paul Police Department in 1978, and has served in no fewer than 19 assignments, rising to the commendable rank of Senior Commander; and
WHEREAS, John has been a leader in programs and efforts that focused on the needs of all Minnesotans, including working on difficult issues such as homelessness, mental illness, and helping victims of violent and sexual crimes; and
WHEREAS, John has been formally recognized by the Saint Paul Police Department or the citizens it serves by formal letter or award no less than 35 times, originating from such diverse sources as the United States Secret Service, the Minnesota Coalition for the Homeless, Police Homeless Outreach, South Metro Human Services, Hearth Connection, Listening House, Parents of Murdered Children, Ramsey County Mental Health Crisis, Duluth Police Department, Minneapolis Police Department, Dallas, Texas Police Department and Saint Paul Police Chiefs McCutcheon, Finney, Harrington and Smith.  In addition to these organizations, countless residents of the City of Saint Paul  have expressed their appreciation for John's outstanding service through numerous letters and cards; and
 
WHEREAS, John has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to serving families in challenging situations by implementing innovative programs that demonstrate positive outcomes, providing guidance and leadership to countless Saint Paul Police Department employees, ensuring the highest standards were always pursued, and providing genuine friendship to an immeasurable body of people who will forever miss his service to the City of Saint Paul.  Now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council would like to recognize and thank Senior Commander John Edward Vomastek for his more than 33 years of dedication to his work and his ongoing commitment to improving the quality of life and safety of Saint Paul residents, including those without a permanent structure to call home, and for his role as a mentor and leader in the field of Public Safety; and be it
 
FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council hereby declares that Wednesday, September 14, 2011 shall forever be known as JOHN E. VOMASTEK DAY in the great city of Saint Paul, Minnesota.
