Title

Authorizing the Department of Parks and Recreation, Division of Como Park Zoo and Conservatory, to pay costs associated with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums accreditation process.

Body

WHEREAS, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums is the nationally recognized accrediting body for zoos and aquariums, establishing and maintaining the highest standards in animal care, veterinary programs, conservation, education, guest services, safety, and operations; and

WHEREAS, accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums demonstrates a commitment to professional excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement in zoological and conservation practices; and

WHEREAS, the Division of Como Park Zoo and Conservatory has maintained accreditation through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and is required to undergo a comprehensive reaccreditation process every five years to maintain accredited status; and

WHEREAS, the accreditation process includes a detailed review of institutional operations, policies, procedures, financial sustainability, conservation initiatives, educational programming, animal wellbeing, and facility standards, as well as an on-site inspection conducted by an accreditation team; and

WHEREAS, the accreditation process provides an opportunity for external professional evaluation and supports the continued delivery of high-quality animal care, conservation leadership, education, and public service for the residents and visitors of Saint Paul; and

WHEREAS, the costs associated with the accreditation site visit include program registration fees and expenses related to transportation, lodging, and meals for the accreditation inspection team; and

WHEREAS, the estimated cost of the accreditation process and site visit is anticipated to be expended from the department budget; and

WHEREAS, the City Council finds that the expenditure of funds for transportation, lodging, meals, and related accreditation expenses serves a public purpose by facilitating the professional evaluation and accreditation of Como Park Zoo and Conservatory; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council hereby authorizes the Department of Parks and Recreation, Division of Como Park Zoo and Conservatory, to participate in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums accreditation process and to expend funds for the associated costs of the accreditation site visit, up to $5,000.
