WHEREAS, ONS is aware that St. Paul Public Schools (SPPS) will merge all St. Paul Public Schools summer school programs to three buildings for six weeks during the summer 2023 school term for intensive credit recovery and learning; and

WHEREAS, ONS has partnered with St. Paul Public Schools (SPPS) and created the Project PEACE and SPPS Summer School Initiative that will provide community-first lead strategic engagement at SPPS summer schools and nearby violent hotspots with the aim of reducing youth violence; and

WHEREAS, The Project PEACE and SPPS Summer School Initiative needs funding to hire a team of workers to support the initiative, specifically a Violence Interrupter, a School Support Liaison, and Community Support Liaisons; and

WHEREAS, the St. Paul & Minnesota Foundation supports violence reduction efforts by community agencies and has grant funding available in the amount of $50,000 to assist the Project Peace and SPPS Summer School Initiative to hire team members; and

WHEREAS, receiving the grant funds would support ONS’s overall mission to “establish, coordinate, and/or advance violence prevention, interruption, and reconciliation strategies in order to increase safety”; and

RESOLVED, that the City of Saint Paul City Council, upon recommendation of the Mayor, does authorize the Office of Neighborhood Safety to apply to the Saint Paul and Minnesota Foundation for a discretionary grant in the amount of $50,000 to hire workers for the Project PEACE and SPPS Summer School Initiative.
