Honoring the recipients of the 2013 Sustainable Saint Paul Awards.

 

Body

WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul has a long history of proactively protecting our air, water and urban landscape; and

 

WHEREAS, Mayor Coleman and the City Council are committed to making Saint Paul The Most Livable City in America and a leader in sustainable urban living; and

 

WHEREAS, the City has already taken many steps toward making Saint Paul one of the greenest cities in the country, including

 

•      hiring the City's first sustainability coordinator, water resources coordinator and energy coordinator;

•      formally endorsing the U.S. Mayors' Climate Protection Agreement;

•      increasing recycling 13.5% over the past five years while reducing CO2 emissions 45,044 tons per year;

•      investing more than $1 million to further retrofit city buildings for energy conservation;

•      adopting a Sustainable Development Policy for New and Renovated Municipal Buildings;

•      directing City fleets to use E85 and 5-10% biodiesel, and adding hybrid vehicles to the city fleet;

•      supporting waste reduction and recycling initiatives within our parks, at large entertainment venues and citywide events;

•      making development of the National Great River Park and Central Corridor Light Rail Transit top City priorities; and

 

WHEREAS, the City initiated the Sustainable Saint Paul Awards to honor outstanding achievements of individuals, businesses and organizations that are demonstrating a commitment to environmental stewardship throughout Saint Paul and beyond; and

 

WHEREAS, by sponsoring these awards, the City hopes to encourage all residents, businesses, community groups and nonprofits in Saint Paul to implement similar projects, such that replication of these efforts will further enhance the City's quality of life; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, that the Mayor and Council of the City of Saint Paul do hereby make the following Sustainable Saint Paul Awards:

 

•      Peggy Lynch for Exceptional Environmental Stewardship

•      Pier Foundry and Pattern Shop for Energy Efficiency or Conservation

•      Ramsey County and District Energy Saint Paul Law Enforcement Center Solar Thermal Project for Renewable Energy

•      Kendall's Hardware Store for Green Building Design- Commercial

•      University of Saint Thomas Anderson Student Center for Green Building Design - Institutional

•      Great River School for Environmental Education & Awareness

•      For Recycling On Grand (FROG) for Waste Reduction for Recycling or Composting - Commercial

•      Macalester Groveland Community Council's Organics Recycling Program for Waste Reduction, Recycling or Composting - Residential

•      Clara Stahlmann Roeder for Youth Leadership

•      Department of Public Works Hamline Midway Pervious Alley Project for Sustainable City Staff

•      Jukka Kukkonen for Transportation Options

•      Kinnell Tackett for Natural Resources Conservation

•      Como Lake Neighbor Network for Water Quality or Conservation

•      Health Systems Cooperative Laundry for Green Practices
