Recognizing Hallie Q. Brown Community Center's 85 years of service in Saint Paul.

Whereas, Hallie Q. Brown Community Center was founded in 1929 as a settlement house in the historic Rondo Neighborhood; and
 
Whereas, Hallie Q. Brown Community Center was founded out of the settlement house movement to meet the needs of African Americans establishing themselves or connecting to services in Saint Paul that they had limited or no access to; and
 
Whereas, Over the last 85 years, it has served as a gathering place and community building institution for African Americans and all people in Saint Paul, while helping to shape the lives and provide necessary services and resources; and
 
Whereas, Hallie Q. Brown Community Center has evolved from an independent human services provider to a multi-service hub center and nonprofit social service agency and is the administrative body of the Martin Luther King Center, serving the Summit University neighborhood and broader Twin Cities Community and giving birth to such institutions as the nationally renown Penumbra Theater Company; and
Whereas, Hallie Q. Brown Community Center serves the Summit University and broader Saint Paul community through its five core areas of Early Childhood Education, Youth Enrichment, Basic Needs, Senior Services and Multiservice Hub services; and
Whereas, The mission of Hallie Q. Brown Community Center, Inc is to improve the quality of life in our community by providing access to critical human services, fostering and promoting personal growth, and developing community leadership; and
Whereas, Hallie Q. Brown Community Center was recognized in the Minnesota Sesquicentennial celebration as an essential part of Minnesota's history and development; and
Whereas, on October 4, 2014 they are celebrating their 85th year of service to the community; and
Now, therefore, be it resolved, the Saint Paul City Council recognizes Hallie Q. Brown Community Center as having made an indelible imprint on the fabric of the city of Saint Paul and is an integral part of its history, culture and heritage; and it serves to preserve the legacy of the historic Rondo Neighborhood, the African American community and the citizenry of Saint Paul now and forevermore.
