By now everyone knows that I am totally opposed to this property being considered to be used as a commercial tap room/brewery. Mainly because this is an R4-One family zoned neighborhood and that is why I purchased my home here. There was a tire shop across the alley for years in the beginning and they closed at a reasonable time daily, plus the fact they didn't do business not did their customers enter behind my home. Most of the residents within 100 ft of this property are opposed to this whole idea. The Historic Use Variance is a new rule that fails to place conditions that will take into account the use being appropriate for its proximity to nearby residences, the Historic Use Variance should be mended to have the same requirements that the regular zoning variances have to meet. The reason we (the neighbors) haven't made progress at the Planning Commission is they are dealing with a brand new ordinance they're required to go by and there are no such requirements on the Historic Use Variance as there are with the regular variance. The Stone House (445 Smith Ave) is its first test in St. Paul, and this would set a bad precedent for the city. Please Mr. Thune should this variance pass, (God willing it won't) I ask that there be conditions that will help to keep our neighborhood in some kind of tact. No patio should be permitted,as it is far to close to homes with working people , school children and elderly people. This has always been a residential property and to preserve this property there should not be the huge building built for a brewery as this would be incompatible with the surrounding context. There does not need to be a brewery on site for him to have a saloon. Even if the building were a saloon for a few months, it was never a brewery. For at least 145 years it's been a quiet residential home. We need your help here. We have fought as hard as we can to preserve our neighborhood and our homes, our peace of mind and the safety of our children and grandchildren. Thank You for hearing me and my neighbors.
