More news has come out recently about possible further expansion near St. Thomas. As such, I would like to take this opportunity to share the comments below with the entire council. Whether it’s William Mitchell, St. Thomas or Lincoln Avenue near Victoria – parking permit areas simply transfer the problem to someone else. No one has a right to reserved parking in front of their home. These are public streets that we all pay for not personal parking spaces. Thank you for your consideration. I’ll try to get better about contacting you with positive feedback as well when I agree with something you pass because I know you do a lot of good work. I read in the 1/26/11 edition of the Villager that you and the City Council voted to expand permit parking areas near St. Thomas and William Mitchell. I have concerns with the existence (much less expansion) of such restricted parking areas:I understand residents not wishing to have the streets next to their homes filled with parked cars. We live across the street from an 18 unit apartment building with no off-street parking so I have firsthand experience with masses of cars in front of and to the side of our home. The thing is this was an existing issue before we bought our home. Residents proximate to the above mentioned permit areas either knew about the parking situation, or should have known, before they moved in. Restricting parking on one block simply moves the problem to the next block. You haven’t addressed the root cause of the problem you literally just kicked it down the street. Is someone on Chatsworth between Portland and Ashland supposed to be any happier with all the new cars on the street than the person between Summit and Portland? Because that’s were they’ll end up. According to the Villager, approximately 80% of the property owners on Chatsworth signed the parking permit petition. I’m shocked…that it wasn’t 100%. Perhaps someone wasn’t home. Were surrounding residents notified of the petition and given the opportunity to voice opposition? In closing, I’m curious to know how you would feel if you lived just outside the new restricted parking area and had all these new cars parking near your home. Moving cars to another block is kind of like someone dumping their garbage on your lawn. It’s making the statement that “I don’t like this or wish to put up with it…but you should.” Thank you for considering my comments.
