Authorizing the Department of Parks and Recreation, Como Park Zoo and Conservatory, to accept funding from Polar Bears International to be used for hotel and travel costs for Senior Zookeeper to facilitate at PBI Climate Alliance 2022 Summit;  3 October - 10 October 2022 in Churchill, Manitoba, Canada.

 

Body

WHEREAS, the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory is a leading facility in conservation and education, as well as an active participant in the captive polar bear community; and

 

WHEREAS, Polar Bears International (PBI) is supported by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and has invited Como Park Zoo and Conservatory’s participation in the PBI Climate Alliance 2022 Summit; and

 

WHEREAS, PBI is prepared to pay for, hotel, and lodging for staff to attend the training and participate by facilitating sessions on polar bear husbandry, training, enrichment, and climate change at an estimated cost of $1500; and


WHEREAS, participation in the training will be a valuable opportunity for staff and the zoo to share and grow their knowledge of polar bear husbandry; and

 

WHEREAS, the City Council finds that there is a public purpose for the expenditure of the travel expenses in ensuring that Como Zoo continues to be considered as a leader in the polar bear community; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council hereby accepts the funding for the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory Zoo staff to attend the PBI Climate Alliance 2022 Summit.
