Accepting the gift of travel expenses from Mayors for a Guaranteed Income for Mayor Melvin Carter and Director Muneer Karcher-Ramos, Office of Financial Empowerment, to attend a Planning Retreat in Los Angeles on March 16, 2022.

WHEREAS, Mayors for a Guaranteed Income (“MGI”) is a network of mayors that advocate for a guaranteed income-direct, recurring cash payments-that lifts communities by building economic resilience for recipients and serves as a policy antidote to poverty and rising wealth and income inequality; and
WHREAS, guaranteed income pilots are underway in a number of cities and counties across the country. The City of Saint Paul launched the People's Prosperity Guaranteed Income Pilot, which provided 150 Saint Paul families with $500 per month as a guaranteed income pilot for up to 18 months as part of its work with MGI; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Melvin Carter, and Director Muneer Karcher-Ramos, Office of Financial Empowerment, were invited to attend to attend an MGI Planning Retreat in Los Angeles, CA on March 16, 2022 to discuss organizational goals for 2022; and
WHEREAS, MGI has offered to cover the travel expenses, lodging and meals for Mayor Carter and Director Karcher-Ramos to attend the convening; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Saint Paul finds that attendance at this briefing is beneficial to the City by providing an opportunity for participants to engage in sessions to develop strategies, obtain relevant and up-to-date knowledge on operations and to connect with other municipalities who have also participated in pilot programs; now
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council accepts the gift of travel expenses, lodging and meals for Mayor Carter and Director Karcher-Ramos to attend the MGI Convening in Los Angeles, CA and thanks MGI for its generous gift.
