Honoring Malka Lotterstein Goodman for her contributions to the City of Saint Paul.

WHEREAS, Malka Lotterstein Goodman was born on September 13, 1929 in the town of Kiryat Motzkin outside Haifa, in what was then Palestine and is today Israel; and
WHEREAS, Malka Lotterstein Goodman’s parents fled Russia due to pogroms against the Jewish people and arrived in Israel penniless; and
WHEREAS, Malka Lotterstein Goodman’s father built a factory and her parents raised four children, three of whom stayed to live in Israel; and
WHEREAS, Malka Lotterstein Goodman served in the Israeli Army, the Hagana, in the War of Independence and rose to the rank of Lieutenant; and
WHEREAS, Malka Lotterstein Goodman traveled to Bologna, Italy to study medicine and met her future husband, Ernest Goodman, who was also studying medicine in Bologna; and
WHEREAS, Malka Lotterstein Goodman moved to Saint Paul, where her husband Ernest Goodman had been born, and has made her home in Saint Paul from 1953 to this day; and
WHEREAS, Malka Lotterstein Goodman earned her medical degree from the University of Minnesota and completed additional training to become a psychiatrist; and
WHEREAS, Malka Lotterstein Goodman practiced child, adolescent, and family psychiatry for 35 years in Saint Paul, contributing to the mental health and success of thousands of Satin Paul families; and
WHEREAS, Malka Lotterstein Goodman and her husband, Ernest Goodman sheltered unwed mothers who were ostracized in their own communities, and counseled and provided them with free medical care; and
WHEREAS, Malka Lotterstein Goodman and her husband, Ernest Goodman, have given generously to the Saint Paul Jewish community, including the Jewish Community Center and the Temple of Aaron, and to the arts, particularly the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra;
WHEREAS, Malka Lotterstein Goodman donated her time to mentor and teach counselors providing free walk-in counseling services and, to this day, still volunteers at the Saint Paul Sholom Home; and
WHEREAS, Malka Lotterstein Goodman has been an inspiration for her three children, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and many friends; and
WHEREAS, Malka Lotterstein Goodman has lived a long and productive life contributing to the health and cultural richness of the Saint Paul community; and now
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Saint Paul honors the life and contributions of Malka Lotterstein Goodman; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED the City of Saint Paul offers its sincere congratulations and good wishes to Malka Lotterstein Goodman on her 90th birthday. Mazel Tov.
