Approving a two-year unpaid leave of absence for John Serier, Commander, Saint Paul Police Department.

WHEREAS, John Serier, is a regular employee of the City in the title of Commander in the Saint Paul Police Department, and has certain rights as a City employee and has asked for a two-year unpaid leave of absence; and
WHEREAS, John Serier was appointed by the Ramsey County Board of Commissioners as Ramsey County Sheriff effective January 10, 2017 and this appointment will likely last two years, until the next Sheriff is elected and sworn in; and
WHEREAS, the Saint Paul Civil Service Rules allow up to a one year leave of absence for employees but the City would like to grant a two-year leave of absence for John Serier as Ramsey County Sheriff.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, pursuant to the authority granted in the Section 12.06 of the Saint Paul City Charter, the City Council hereby amends Rule 19 of the Civil Service Rules to authorize the Human Resources Director to approve a leave of absence for John Serier for a period not to exceed two years.
