Authorizing the Police Department to accept a grant in the amount of $200,000 from the State of Minnesota, Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) for the launching of its jobs training program.
Body
WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul, Police Department has been awarded a grant from the State of Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development; and
WHEREAS, under Minnesota Session Laws of 2016, Chapter 189, Article 12, the State is empowered to grant funds to expand economic opportunities and eliminate workforce and educational barriers faced by people of color, women, people with disabilities, veterans, and/or youth in Minnesota; and
WHEREAS, this grant provides funds to support the Police Department to launch its job training program for law enforcement careers that will be more representative of the Saint Paul communities; and
WHEREAS, the project will target enrollment for underemployed or unemployed low income young adults from Saint Paul communities and will mirror an earn-as-you-learn approach where the students will receive skills training and certification for placement into entry level positions while being supported in pursuing a degree required for licensure as a police officer; and
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that council accepts this grant and authorizes the City of Saint Paul to enter into, and Assistant Chief Kathleen Wuorinen to implement as substantially set forth in the attached agreement with the State of Minnesota.
