Recognizing September 22, 2016 as Renters' Day of Action in the City of Saint Paul

WHEREAS, on September 22, 2016, forty-six cities, including the City of Saint Paul, and across the United States, community organizations and renters will take action to declare a national Renter State of Emergency and lift up the voices, power, and demands of renters across the country; and
WHEREAS, in 2016 alone, more than 2,020 eviction cases have been filed in Ramsey County; and
WHEREAS, only half of all renters in the U.S. have affordable housing; and
WHEREAS, there are only 31 affordable units for every 100 extremely low-income renters; and
WHEREAS, renters of color have the least access to affordable housing; 59% of black households, 57% of Hispanic households, 48% of Asian households, and 46% of white households need affordable housing; and
WHEREAS, in the City of Saint Paul, renters are demanding to stop displacement, gentrification, and high costs of rents and to ensure community stabilization with clean, safe, and affordable homes for all; and therefore, be it
RESOLVED, the Saint Paul City Council recognizes September 22, 2016 as Renters' Day of Action in the City of Saint Paul
