Renaming Eagle Street Plaza Park to Cossetta Park.

WHEREAS, the Saint Paul Parks & Recreation Commission is an appointed body established to advise the Mayor and City Council on long-range and city-wide matters related to Parks and Recreation; and
WHEREAS, the Cossetta family has lived and contributed significantly to the culture, history, and economy of Saint Paul for four generations; and
WHEREAS, Michel Cossetta, arriving from Calabria, Italy, established a tiny food market in 1911 at the intersections of Ryan Avenue, Eagle Parkway, and Chestnut Streets, the current location of Eagle Street Park Plaza. Michel's son Frank "Louis" Cossetta and two more generations of the Cossetta family have grown that tiny food market into a grocery store and two restaurants now located on West 7th Street. The Cossetta family has continually operated a food business on the West End through four generations and over more than 100 years; and
WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul wishes to honor the Cossetta family by officially changing the name of Eagle Street Plaza Park to Cossetta Park; and
WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul Parks & Recreation Commission Policy #7, Naming Parks and Recreation Sites, 2012 Update, provides criteria for naming of parks, and this recommendation complies with the spirit of the policy, and
WHEREAS, the Saint Paul Parks & Recreation Commission voted to endorse the proposal to officially rename Eagle Street Plaza Park, with address at 217 Chestnut Street, to Cossetta Park at their November 12, 2015 meeting; Now Therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, the the Saint Paul City Council officially renames Eagle Street Plaza Park, located at 217 Chestnut Street, as Cossetta Park.
